After moving into their new home in Zionsville, Indiana, this family approached our design studio with the goal of transforming their backyard into a more functional and inviting environment for gathering and enjoying time together.

The existing backyard had deteriorated over time and was defined by a boulder retaining wall that followed the natural slope of the site, supporting an existing swimming pool and concrete patio. As part of the renovation, a new concrete block retaining wall was introduced along the footprint of the existing structure, establishing a new foundation for the outdoor living spaces.

Set above this new retaining wall, a cedar structure was designed with two hip roofs and an adjacent pergola, creating a series of sheltered spaces for outdoor living and entertaining. Integrated lighting, ceiling fans, and built-in cabinetry were incorporated throughout the structure to enhance functionality and extend its use throughout the seasons.

The existing concrete patio was selectively cut to create a seamless transition to the new paver surface, while portions of the original boulder walls were carefully repurposed to form new planting beds closer to the residence.

The planting design focused on the client’s desire for increased color and seasonal interest. A carefully curated palette of perennials was selected to provide successive blooms throughout the year, creating an evolving landscape experience. The hardscape was defined by a more geometric language, with clean lines and structured forms that transition into softer, more organic curves within the planting areas.

The result is a cohesive outdoor environment that balances architectural structure with the natural character of the landscape, creating a more functional, comfortable, and enduring extension of the home.
